TacTac

First of all, completely NOT Mexican food and I totally don't care. I'm not selling you on this because it even resembles a taco - it's more like a burrito you make at home when you are cleaning out the leftovers and you think, "Hum?? That's pretty good. Also kind of strange... but I like it." I mean, it was a total mess but I scarfed it all down and felt good about it (maybe because it's a lot like the "Mexican" food we made in Alaska in the 80's & 90's). Didn't regret it. Will totally eat there again and think, "What am I eating?" but still be totally ok with it.

If you are a super picky eater where everything has to be "authentic" and just like home please don't go here. This isn't for you. Just keep walking. To go McDonalds or something. For everyone else who like a fun little adventure you might just find a delightful little place to eat some weird Kor-Mex food. Personally, I don't care if people from other cultures experiment with food and flavors. That's how we come up with interesting, inventive new things to eat.

Plus, it has Jarritos and you can't go wrong with Jarritos in a cute lunch stop with an adorable owner eating food wrapped in a tortilla. Maybe it's my seven years in Korea, but I was a content little waegukin.

It's not terribly cheap but not horribly expensive. One "taco" (which is more like a small burrito) and a Jaritos was about 8,800 won or something like that. Can't really remember. Didn't break the bank, but did make me scream "I should have gotten two". They also haven't made their menus yet so if you have zero Korean skills it might be hard to order.

We made the app to accompany the blog because it's easier to keep update with current information. In the past we've tried keeping the information on the blog but it's too hard for us to maintain the information in two places at once over time. 5 Favorite Finds Tongbok Market Young Forest 청년숲

Last week a newly renovated area of the Pyeongtaek Tongbok Market opened to the public. Last night we finally had time to check it out and we are in LOVE! So romantic and prettyyyyyyy. One of the best dates I have taken myself on in a while (I adore eating alone).

This super clean, white, bright delightful little corner of the city is easily the hippest, most adorable place to be right now.  It's like walking onto the set of a drama where young dreamers have opened shops. You can sit and watch people all night long.

Keep in mind, this is not "for foreigners" although it's filled with things we all love. It's for Korean's so it's not filled with tons of English although most of shop keepers knew at least something. Just go and embrace the adventure. It's almost impossible to go wrong.

This area is NOT big. Maybe 1 block long by 1/2 a block wide. It's like a cozy little hidden paradise. It's so fun to walk through the history and comfort of the traditional market and then emerge here surrounded by a little hipster haven.

This is my new favorite place to be and it needs to be yours too. Grab your favorite boy or girl and get here for a date ASAP! It's very new which means it's only about 1/2 filled and yet it's still awesome. Right now there aren't lines and fights for tables. Go now before that changes.

Now let's talk about our five favorite finds at Tongbok Market Young Forest 청년숲

Fire Cooked Lobster
We want to eat all their lobster rolls. Plus that we only about 9,900 won each. Perfect. (read full blog here)

TacTac
Weird taco/burrito hybrids that we honestly kind of enjoy. Ok, we totally were happy but we also know lots of folks will judge us for liking something so totally not Mexican but called a taco. We don't care. It's a lovely change of pace from other places in the area. They also have Jarritos which is a selling point on it's own. A drink and a "taco" set me back around 8,500 won or something close (read the full blog here)

OMG Fresh Market
There is a lot going on here, but the most important thing happening is vegetarians can eat here. You can add your name to the cookbook and they will message you when the items are in season. Honestly, there is a lot more going on here and we will get a full explanation. It's so friggen hipster it's almost too much. Completely love it. Most likely a terrible business plan. We don't care. Looking forward to getting our text message about salads.

Sweet 1981
Mostly this is a bakery but it's also a coffee shop. Once you are finished stuffing all the food in your thankful faces, stop by to top yourself off with the necessary sugar and caffeine

Board Game Cafe & Pub
Are you completely full? Now it's time to go drink!!! and play some games.

The Anatomy of Lotte Mart

Everyone knows that box stores like Emart, Homeplus, and Lotte Mart are where you go for all your foreigner specific grocery shopping needs - but do you REALLY know everything they have to offer? Do you realize how super easy they can make your life?

These facilities are true one-stop-lifestyle-shops that will make a person's life (especially a parent's life) in Korea extremely simple and efficient. Yes, the first time you use some of these services it might feel uncomfortable because of the language barrier, but the pay off is immense when you can do nearly all the important stuff in one building that includes free parking.

Let's look at Lotte Mart in Pyeongtaek to give you an idea of how efficient these facilities are. This is an overview. I've not detailed prices or visited each place and tried their services individually, mostly because I tend to visit the stores closer to my home. However, Lotte Mart is comprehensive and easy to access so it deserves the attention so here we go.

Family Health Clinic
If you aren't feeling well they have a family clinic tucked away behind the escalators in the basement of the Pyeongtaek Lotte Mart. It offers pediatrics, ear nose throat, and internal medicine. It's family themed, but anyone can feel free to stop in for a quick checkup. Truly amazing.

Pharmacy
After you are finished with the clinic, you can run upstairs and fill your prescription at the pharmacy. Also, as a generally fyi, you can also pickup affordable, over the counter birth control with no prescription necessary (6,000-10,000 won). In Korea, standard birth control is not Dr prescribed and it's extremely affordable.

Daiso
In the basement, next door to the clinic you will find a small, efficient little Daiso where you can save that money. Daiso is life.

HiMart
Are you looking for some electronics, a new refrigerator,or a heated blanket? This popular electronics shop has a small store with rice cookers, pressure cookers, printer ink, cell phone chargers, and HDMI cables and many other things you need to stay connected.

Optical Store
Maybe your glasses just broke, your prescription is outdated, or you need new contacts? Just stop in and pickup some replacements. In Korea your eye exam is free when you get new frames or lenses and your glasses can be finished in about 15 minutes. You can also usually find a lovely pair for glasses for around 60,000 - 80,000 won so get two pairs if you feel like it. Sometimes prescription lenses can take up to 7 days, sometimes you can go home with them same-day.

Culture Center
One of the coolest parts of box stores are these centers that run affordable programs for adults and kids. I personally have often taken dance classes in these centers because they have parking, classes in the evenings, and prices that fit my budget. For parents and kids they offer a plethora of programs that often including pre-school or daycare type programs. The program catalog is in Korean, but join a language exchange and you can usually find a lovely friend to help translate it. Seriously, these centers are awesome. I used these programs long before I spoke Korean (friends helped me signup for things, or the lady at the front desk walked me through signup via google translate). Everyone was always welcoming and helpful and (in may case) there was always somebody who spoke some English in class who helped me keep up.

Detailing and Car Wash
If your car is a hot mess like mine often is, you can leave it to get cleaned up while you shop. It's a perfect use of your time and keeps the ride looking like new. It's just sitting around collecting dust while you shop anyway.

Auto Mechanic
Maybe your car needs a new battery, the oil changed, brakes checked, or fluids topped off. You can leave it with the mechanic while you grab your groceries for the week or pickup a new pair of glasses.

Keys
If you are like me and often lose keys, this is a handy place to know about.

Dry Cleaner
I think we can all agree that dry cleaning is annoying, but it takes out the sting when it's this easy to drop-off and pick-up. You will be coming and going from here anyway, why not just keep it simply and use the dry cleaners at your favorite mart?

Passport Photos
When you live abroad you need passport photos for everything. Maybe you have an appointment at immigration coming up or you are applying for a Chinese visa. You can solve that problem on your next grocery trip.

Veterinarian
Some of us have fur babies and we need convenience as well. One of our dogs was fixed by a vet in a box store. It was affordable and worked out well. We also find it an easy place to pickup heart worm, tick meds, or special things we need for the puppies.

Manicures
So, you've dropped off the car to get washed, the kids are in playcare, your glasses are ordered, you visited the ENT picked up your meds, picked up new heartworm for the dog, and dropped off the clothes at the cleaners.  Time to treat yourself. Why not get a manicure? It's here and you've got the time.

Haircuts and Styles
Maybe you don't need your nails done, but it's been a while since you have treated yourself to a haircut. Take the time to stop off and get a touch up. Usually these places are reasonably priced, modern, and often have happy-hour specials on cuts and colors.

Skincare Clinic
Maybe your hair and nails are on point, but your skin isn't looking so bright. Maybe you need a facial. They have that here. A little google translate and you will be on your way to a fresher face.

Essential Oils
You have been a rockstar and accomplished more today than you thought humanly possible, but you are also exausted because there of the language barrier. Stop off at the essential oils shop and pickup something to sooth your mind and body. Essential oils are all the rage right now and you can get your fix at Lotte Mart. There may not be the selection you are used to back home, that can never be promised, but they have the greatest hits and that's what's important.

Book a Trip
Want a cheap trip to Thailand or a weekend escape to Jeju? You can find amazing deals with Korean travel agents. Why not see if they have a little something that fits your schedule and budget? Sure, there is a language barrier, but if you are adventurous sometimes you can save a lot of money this way.

So, next time you want to go and just get it all over with and don't want to drive all over town - just go to Lotte Mart. Only not on the second and fourth Sundays of the month when all stores of this type are closed. (Closed days are noted in the South of Seoul app)

Discount Manga Book Store 만화 할인 매장

This is a post for the super nerds who love comics and Korean language.

If you are a  lover over the manga / manhwa style you are going to love this discount bookstore located a short walk from AK Plaza. There are sooooooooo many books as well as quite a few puzzles (random) and manga inspired toys and trinkets. Keep in mind, these books will be in Korean but it's another great way to practice the language if you are learning.

For whatever reason, this store name can't be found on Naver by address or by phone number. You can basically only find it by walking by so I thought I would give you all the heads up.

Zip (delicious meat near AK Plaza)

For years now, I've been looking for a samgyeupsal restaurant near AK Plaza that made me want to come back. I'm not saying I haven't eaten meat downtown town and thought it was fine, but none made me dream of a return trip. (Yup, I'm a meat snob now. I never even saw it coming.) Not until now.

Which is why taking a vacation is so important. With more time to meet up with friends and just chill out, I found the motivation to give the city center one more try. While prepping for dinner with Jennifer and Sue of Pyeongtaek Korean tutors I did a bit of research on Naver and found this new gem.

Zip (as I'm going to call it since that's what is in English) is located next to the cute little park with the water feature a few blocks from the AK Plaza. The place is newish, bright and clean with tables and chairs so no sitting on the floor was required. Their grills are big and spacious with plenty of room for all the different items included in their affordable set menus. Since I like my kimchi and my garlic well grilled this system works for me.

The meal itself boasts a variety of balanced flavors, fresh ingredients, and quality meat cuts. The samgyeupsal is thick cut and gorgeous. There is only one other place in Pyeongtaek that I have round comparable meat quality (for a reasonable price) and it's not well vented so most folks wouldn't feel comfortable eating there.

One thing I can't remember.. if anything was in English. Don't worry though, any set you order will be delicious so just order for a price range and dig in.

As an added bonus, it's a great place for an evening date. You can finish up dinner and then go watch the water and lights dance out front before a stroll along the river walk a few blocks away.

Japanese Ramen

Leave your own review on www.MollaKorea.com. Just: Click Here

Although I've been to Japan, I've never been there with any money (long story for another time). This means I've never had authentic Japanese ramen in Japan. Sure I've tried a few random places in Korea, but nothing really stood out until I found this place in Pyeongtaek. It was delicious. A place I would go out of my way to eat at for sure.

Now, I'm not telling you this is 100% authentic, because I don't know what that even tastes like, I'm just saying I loved eating here and it tastes way more delicious than other ramen I've had. The menu is simple and the shop is small.  It's the perfect place to grab lunch alone or with a friend, but not for large groups.

I finally have my go-to place near AK plaza! It's been a while since I'd found a place I was really excited about for lunch.

It's also very easy to find, right near Del Vino on the other side of the street.

Arati Indian / Nepali Food

Leave your own review on MollaKorea.com. Just: Click Here

Yesterday I stopped in at the new location of the Arati Indian and Nepali Restaurant. It's just opened a branch to Anjeong-ri around the corner from Louis' Bar and Grill and a few blocks from La Mesa.

Since I arrived very early in the day the dining area was nice and quiet, the sun was shining and I was able to really relax in the pleasant, bright space. The patio area is quite stunning and I'm thinking it's will be the perfect place for a mango lassi this summer.

For dinner I had the samosas, chicken biryani and aloo paratha. All three were spicy, rich and delicious. It tasted like I was back in Darjeeling. The flavors were unnervingly spot.

It tasted so much like eating in Northern India that I wondered if it would meet the expectations of people who are more accustomed to Westernized Indian food or food from another region. This is very specifically Himalayan food and it's where my taste preference wanders.

Now, online I had heard that the portion sizes were small, but I have no idea what they are talking about. What I ordered ended up being enough for me for dinner, breakfast, and two snacks and I'm a hearty eater. If I had ordered just one item it would have been more than enough for dinner.

If you are a picky eater who doesn't like spicy food, don't even bother with going here. However, if you like food with a hearty kick in the pants you're going to really love this.
